The Key Life Skills That Kids Need to Know

It is true that school gives children a well rounded education, but does it prepare them for life after graduation? Learning about cells and basic economic patterns are not all that schools should offer their students. Here are a few skills you can teach in your classroom that may not follow the curriculum word-by-word, but will definitely help students acquire life skills that will prove indispensable in the future.

1. Social Skills

Work on your students ability to carry out a conversation. Teach them to not underestimate the power that words hold. Being good with words, knowing how to address a crowd, and speaking eloquently is an ability that will make or break opportunities throughout one’s life. Start cultivating this skill by helping your kids practice in class, whether it’s giving presentations, talking to peers, or having discussion seminars, don’t forget to highlight the importance of voicing one’s opinion in an effective matter.

2. Profesional Etiquette/Manners

There is a time and place for everything. Begin teaching your kids that they should address elders and authority different than their peers at a young age. Make the distinction between how one should behave at home vs. at someone else’s home. Learning this skill of professionalism and basic manners, will help kids be successful later in life as they gain independence, meet all types of people and expose themselves to the real world.

3. Emotion Regulation and Impulse Control

Kids throw tantrums. It’s a fact. But teaching them how to control their impulses and manage their emotions is a lesson that should not go undermined. It is vital that kids learn this at a young age so that when they are older, and face adversities, they will be able to react in a smart and advantageous manner. Teach kids to stop and think before reacting, to breathe, and consider the consequences of their actions.

4. Care for Another Living Thing

Learning about other’s needs and wants will make kids more sympathetic, understanding and selfless. Give them a plant to look after or even consider giving them a pet. This way they will learn the importance of treating others as they wish to be treated and being considerate and respectful. This is a great way to ensure that kids have successful interpersonal relationships later in their lives. Also, emphasize the importance of treating all classmates as equals and being a reliable friend.
